Tennessee County

A former county
… former county in what is now the state of Tennessee, was formed in 1788 and named for a Cherokee Indian word whose meaning is not now known. Clarks-ville became the county seat, but the county was divided into Montgomery and Robertson Counties in 1796, when Tennessee County gave its name to the new state. Part of the territory ceded by North Carolina in 1789 to the federal government.
