Fall Line

… the dividing line between Coastal Plain and Piedmont North Carolina where the soft sedimentary soils of the Coastal Plain meet the hard rocks of the Piedmont. It often is marked in streams by falls and rapids. The fall line runs W of Wilson and E of Sanford in an irregular progression N and s.
