South Creek
Also known as: Oregon, Stanton-Harrold, Stanton, Harold
… town in SE Beaufort County on a peninsula formed by the mouths of Bond and Muddy Creeks as they enter Pamlico River. Settled prior to 1794, when it was known as Stanton-Harrold for two men who operated a sawmill there. Apparently known as Harold in the early nineteenth century and as Oregon (for the first steamboat to come up the Pamlico River—see Oregon Inlet) about the middle of the century. Post office, 1851-1954, operated as South Creek. Inc. 1883 as Stanton. Inc. 1925 as South Creek, but no longer active in municipal affairs.
