Hatteras Island
Also known as: Hertfords Island, Hatrask, Hatorask, Hattorask
… one of the Outer Banks of E Dare County extending from Hatteras Inlet on the S to New Inlet and Oregon Inlet on the n. Appears as Hatrask on the White map, 1585, though at that time the name was not applied to as much of the Island as today. The name appears as Hattorask, though misplaced, on the Comberford map, 1657. Smith's map, 1624, calls it Hertfords Island, while the Moseley map, 1733, gives it its present name.
