Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Establishment authorized by Congress in 1926 was the culmination of activity for the purpose beginning in the 1880s. Administered by the National Park Service since 1931. Contains approx. 461,000 acres. Has campgrounds, museums, restorations, nature trails, and other features of interest, including a variety of wild animals, birds, and plants. Clingmans Dome, alt. 6,642, the highest point in the park, has an observation tower.
